Reading and Praying with the Bible

Set aside some time each day to read and reflect on the Bible. Begin and end your scripture reading with a prayer.  Take time to read the introduction to the biblical book from which you have chosen.  When was it written ? Who wrote it?  To whom was it written and why?  What were the cultural and historical conditions at the time of the writing?

Read footnotes that relate to the passages you choose to read, to explain difficult words or expressions.   Use a Biblical Commentary which helps to explain the culture of the time, and the meaning of the text to the people of antiquity.

Read the passage again.

Listen and relax in the presence of God.  Ask yourself:  What does this passage mean for me now in my situation?  End with a prayer .
